Day 55: "Veggies!"

The youth group here is involved in growing a big veggie patch for the Food Resource Bank.  The kids sell their produce to church members and/or stores.  The money is used to buy seeds which in turn are sent to third world countries.  To begin with, the kids got someone from church to sponsor them (which I assume covered the cost of planting their patch of veggies in the group's garden.

After church there was an event out by the garden  for the youth group and their sponsors.  Grandma had sponsored Drew, so after church we had lemonade and cookies while the kids showed off their patch.  (Zucchini, anyone?)

Speaking of veggies, we tasted our first corn on the cob since arriving here in the corn belt of the USA.  YUM!

  1. The sweet corn was SOOOOO good and sweet and tender. They've been having a drought here, the worst in decades, but the corn is still green - we're told that they have developed hybrid varieties of corn that sink their roots deep, 10-12 feet sometimes, when the plant can't find water at the surface. Amazing! But still the yield will be shockingly low because it hasn't rained in a long time :-(
