Firecrackers, hotdogs, family, friends, flags, parades...It's great to be in the USA on the 4th of July. (Usually we let off one firework in NZ, and hope none of the neighbours think too poorly of us Americans!)
We visited Grandpa and left him with an American flag in his room, before heading to the Latrobe parade. I finally figured out that the paper bags all the kids sitting on the curb had were empty...to hold all the candy tossed to the crowd by the various paraders. We saw Steve, Jan, and family...and Sara's Girl Scout friends... selling water and 4th of July lollipops along the parade route to make money for their troupe. (It was a hot day, so we really admired their spunk...and their energy!)
We went to Laura's log cabin for fun and dinner, then back to Grandpa's hospital room to enjoy the fireworks. He had a great view!

ReplyDeleteIt's weird how foreign this kind of patriotism has become to me. Even looking at the pictures makes me want to hide/disassociate as if ridicule could spontaneously happen at any moment.
ReplyDeleteThe parade started out with the military marching carrying flags and then truck after truck carrying veterans of different wars - the people started appauding for them from the beginning and kept clapping till "normal" floats started comming (at least 15 minutes). At first, it was a bit odd to me, but by the end, I was proud of what these young men (some now as old as Grandpa) had done to help secure freedom in our country.

ReplyDeleteWe bought donut holes covered in red, white & blue sprinkles and brought them to Laura's place - that's the only R,W,&B things I ate.
ReplyDeleteBetsy was also there with Pam - and they asked about all you kids of ours... and about Nathan % Rachel's ministry. It was good to see them! [Jenny & Katie both have had boy friends for over a year] :-)
